Whether you are struggling with mental health issues like anxiety or depression, trying to sort out a hectic life, or working out which direction to take for a major decision, through individual counselling, Gail will work with you to explore solutions and make sense of what is going on for you.
Individual counselling is really about what you want to work on. In the journey we will begin to gather information on the issues you wish to understand, to explore together and look for options and solutions for change. Together we will discuss family backgrounds, cultures, traditions, roles, and behaviours of members in your families and consider ways of thinking and habits. Understand the triggers of past events, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours and how these are affecting your life and other relationships.
Gail offers a safe, caring, and confidential environment. In one-to-one sessions Gail builds a relationship that enables trust and personal growth.
For years, Gail has helped clients overcome their difficulties that are causing them to feel stuck and unable to move forward. She has listened to countless adults describe the pain they’ ve felt. More importantly, she has helped these people find new ways to cope with their feelings, overcome depression, gain confidence, and feel empowered to change their lives.
Counselling looks different for each client because we all have different needs, wants, and personalities. Gail will want to make sure that you feel like you are going in the right direction. So, she will check in with you on that every now and then. The pace and goals of the counselling will be determined by you. With sessions usually for 50 minutes, the frequency and duration of the counselling will depend on your needs, treatment goals and progress. Many concerns are readily resolved with short term therapy; however, Gail offers longer term therapy for more complex issues, which will become apparent during the sessions.
Research has shown that counselling generally has long-lasting benefits. Gail will look at where problems started i.e., the “root cause” and sort through some of those things. Gail knows you probably want quick relief, and she can look at things like coping and calming skills for that. We all need those skills. There’s a reason you struggle with your difficulties, and you deserve to get to the bottom and make lasting change.
Finally, there is a lot of benefit in talking about things. Unfortunately, we’ve been given the message from society that we’re not supposed to talk about feelings or what we really think about certain things. That somehow, it’s not ok to admit you are having difficulties. So, we end up holding them in. Maybe you hold them until they come out in a way that doesn’t work so well. It can be a lot of work to carry around so much stress. So, through counselling, Gail will help you learn new ways to get those feelings out so that you feel better.
One more thing, you can be yourself. You can say what you want. Counselling is really an “anything goes” situation. So, bring on the realness!
